Parathyroid hormone is inversely related to endothelin-1 in patients on haemodialysis

SUMMARY: Aim: Parathyroid hormone secretion is mainly influenced by hypocalcaemia, hyperphosphataemia and vitamin D deficiency. However, previous in vitro and in vivo studies showed that endothelin-1 can influence parathyroid hormone secretion. This study was aimed at evaluating this relationship in vivo in uraemic patients. Methods: Parathyroid hormone and endothelin-1 plasma concentrations were measured in 67 haemodialysed patients. Patients with history of cardiovascular diseases and those with parathyroid adenoma were excluded. Objectives: Incidence and prevalence of patients in dialytic therapy increased considerably in recent years. The onset of new issues, once overshadowed, linked to a lower quality of life like sexual dysfunction became increasingly common. The first study in this area, dating back to the 1970s, shows the high prevalence of sexual dysfunction among patients in dialytic therapy of both sexes. Later studies proved an association of sexual dysfunction with psyche disorders, anxiety, depression and lack of self-confidence. Prone Position Facilitates Creation of Ulnar-Basilic Arteriovenous Fistula

Background: The distal ulnar-basilic arteriovenous fistula (UBAVF) is a rarely used alternative type of vascular access for haemodialysis. The location of the vein on the back aspect of the forearm forces an extremely uncomfortable external rotation of the upper limb during surgery when the patient is in a supine position. Methods: We present a new approach towards creating UBAVF, which involves placing the patient in the prone position, thus eliminating the aforementioned inconvenience.
